New Year’s Resolutions
As we herald in each New Year, we often feel it necessary to make a New Year’s resolutions and these often include something to do with our health, i.e. healthier lifestyle, exercise more, healthier diet etc. With nearly 3 weeks into 2020 how are you going with your resolution?
When setting health goals, it is always best to see your Doctor or Naturopath who will be able to guide you in the right direction to achieve your health objectives. I am currently offering a Health appraisal for $55 which will allow you to focus on your areas of weakness.
When we set our health goals, we need to think S.M.A.R.T.
The what, how, why we want to achieve. For example, I would like to increase my energy levels from a 3/10 to an 8/10. Your naturopath will be able to guide you on the best way to identify and accomplish this, through adequate sleep, improved diet and lifestyle choices.
By having your starting level with regular check-ins we look at measures greater than 8/10 for energy in our example
Sometimes we aim too high and too fast and that elusive goal becomes just that. For example, suddenly going for half hour walks may be too much with such a low energy but starting with 5-minute walks every day and then gradually increasing as your energy increases, maybe far more attainable. By taking these easy manageable steps in a realistic time frame you arrive at your goal rather than placing it in the “too hard basket”. Your Naturopath is like your health coach and cheer squad, guiding you to your end goal in an ‘achievable’ manner
This focuses on the outcome and about what you hope to achieve with your goal. In our example, having more energy to play football with the kids or ride that bike.
This is the time frame for your goal. For example, you may want more energy to dance at your daughter’s wedding in say 6 months’ time. Motivation is set by setting a date and you can focus and discipline yourself enough to achieve your goal and prevent that sense of discouragement.
Each time we achieve our goals we experience a surge of dopamine, the neurotransmitter that is responsible for pleasure, reward and motivation. This surge of dopamine reinforces your brain for further success, encouraging us to seek more.
